GEOHealth team delivers National Health Insurance
In its continued effort to promote community well-being and strengthen partnerships with key research participants, the GEOHealth West Africa Network organized a one-day outreach event at the Agbogbloshie Scrap Yard in Accra, Ghana, on December 22, 2017. This event was part of the Hub’s broader strategy to ensure that its research participants and the surrounding community have better access to essential healthcare services.
Residents of Agbogbloshie face ongoing health challenges due to environmental hazards and difficult working conditions. Many community members suffer from respiratory illnesses, skin conditions, and other ailments associated with exposure to e-waste and poor sanitation. In response, the GEOHealth team sought to bridge the gap between health needs and healthcare access.
In collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the team facilitated on-site registration for Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The NHIA's Korle-Bu office generously supported the initiative by deploying trained personnel and equipment to register and issue NHIS cards on the spot completely free of charge.
